The Value of Engaging In Civic Service

"... honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold..." (D&C 98:10)-and this would seem to suggest that qualified and able and courageous people should prepare themselves and make themselves available for public and civic service, and not be indifferent or complacent or resigned to sitting on the sidelines. Even at personal sacrifice there ought to be a sufficient number who will make themselves available for public service.
Elder Richard L. Evans, April 5, 1969 General Conference address--see Conference Report, April 1969, Afternoon Meeting, p.74 - 75
Perhaps one area of service too often overlooked is the need for civic service. In the church's statement on Political Neutrality, we receive instruction that "The church does . . . [e]ncourage its members to play a role as responsible citizens in their communities, including becoming informed about issues, voting in elections, participating in governance processes and (as they desire) seeking for elected, appointed or voluntary office."
It could be argued that there has never been a greater need for us to diligently seek good men (and women) and wise men (and women) to uphold; likely we have among us in the Holladay North Stake this very type of men and women that we need to encourage and support in civic service!
